Son considerados <strong>esenciales, ya que nuestro organismo no es capaz de sintetizarlos por s\u00ed mismo<\/strong>, por lo que es <strong>necesario obtenerlos a trav\u00e9s de la alimentaci\u00f3n o, en su defecto, de la suplementaci\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00bfEn Qu\u00e9 Alimentos Puedo Encontrar Omega 3?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Se pueden distinguir 3 tipos principales de \u00e1cidos grasos omega-3: el <strong>\u00e1cido alfa-linol\u00e9nico (ALA)<\/strong>, el <strong>\u00e1cido eicosapentaenoico (EPA) <\/strong>y el <strong>\u00e1cido docosahexaenoico (DHA)<\/strong>. El ALA lo podemos encontrar en alimentos de origen vegetal, tales como las semillas de ch\u00eda y lino, nueces, ciertos aceites vegetales (linaza, soja, canola), as\u00ed como en ciertas legumbres. Por otro lado, el EPA y DHA lo podemos encontrar en alimentos de origen marino, como pescados, mariscos y en ciertas algas. El problema radica en que, a pesar de tener varias fuentes de omega-3 en los alimentos, <strong>muchas personas presentan una dieta pobre en pescados grasos y en fuentes vegetales ricas en ALA, lo que hace que no lleguen a cubrir estas cantidades que se aconsejan<\/strong>. De hecho, un estudio de 2023 realizado por la <em>Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health<\/em> concluy\u00f3 que, <strong>a nivel mundial, existe un d\u00e9ficit significativo de omega-3 en la poblaci\u00f3n <\/strong>(Kris-Etherton, P. M., et al., 2023).<\/p>\n<p>Por tanto, en estos casos ser\u00eda altamente recomendable la suplementaci\u00f3n con omega-3.<\/p>\n<h3><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong>Problemas cardiovasculares<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><\/h3>\n<p>Hoy en d\u00eda ya se tiene constancia de los <strong>efectos positivos<\/strong> que tiene el omega-3, principalmente el <strong>EPA y DHA<\/strong>, <strong>sobre la salud cardiovascular<\/strong>, como puede ser la reducci\u00f3n de los niveles de triglic\u00e9ridos, de la presi\u00f3n arterial, as\u00ed como del riesgo de padecer arritmias, entre otros.<\/p>\n<p>De hecho, un meta-an\u00e1lisis publicado en JAMA Cardiology en 2024 revel\u00f3 que la suplementaci\u00f3n con omega-3 reduce el riesgo de muerte cardiovascular en un 6% en personas con antecedentes de enfermedades card\u00edacas (Gissi-HF Trial Study Group, 2024).<\/p>\n<p>Por esta raz\u00f3n, los <strong>suplementos de omega-3 son com\u00fanmente recomendados a personas con riesgo elevado de enfermedades del coraz\u00f3n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><ol start=\"3\"><li><strong>Trastornos inflamatorios<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><\/h3>\n<p>El omega-3 tiene <strong>propiedades antiinflamatorias<\/strong> que pueden ser <strong>beneficiosas para personas con enfermedades inflamatorias cr\u00f3nicas<\/strong>, como la artritis reumatoide. En estos casos, los suplementos de omega-3 pueden ayudar a reducir la inflamaci\u00f3n y mejorar la funci\u00f3n articular.<\/p>\n<p>Investigaciones recientes, como las de <em>The Journal of Clinical Rheumatology<\/em> (2023), han mostrado que la <strong>suplementaci\u00f3n con omega-3 en personas con artritis reumatoide puede disminuir la necesidad de medicamentos antiinflamatorios no esteroides (AINEs)<\/strong> y mejorar la calidad de vida.<\/p>\n<h3><ol start=\"4\"><li><strong>Trastornos mentales y neurodegenerativos<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><\/h3>\n<p>El omega-3 tambi\u00e9n tiene un <strong>impacto positivo en la salud cerebral<\/strong>. El DHA es un componente fundamental de las membranas neuronales y es crucial para el funcionamiento cognitivo. Se ha demostrado que la <strong>suplementaci\u00f3n con omega-3 puede ser beneficiosa para tratar la depresi\u00f3n, la ansiedad y prevenir el deterioro cognitivo en adultos mayores<\/strong> (The Lancet Psychiatry, 2022).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00bfC\u00f3mo Elegir un Buen Suplemento de Omega-3?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hoy en d\u00eda el mundo de la suplementaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 en crecimiento y podemos encontrar m\u00faltiples productos en el mercado, por lo que es normal no saber qu\u00e9 producto escoger entre tanta oferta. En el caso del omega-3, podemos encontrar <strong>aceite de pescado, aceite de krill, aceite de h\u00edgado de bacalao y aceite de algas<\/strong>, presentando cada uno diferentes fuentes y concentraciones de EPA y DHA. El aceite de pescado es la fuente m\u00e1s com\u00fan de EPA y DHA, y el aceite de krill presenta concentraciones similares de estos \u00e1cidos grasos pero adem\u00e1s tiene astaxantina (antioxidante) y fosfol\u00edpidos, que pueden mejorar su absorci\u00f3n. Por otro lado, el aceite de h\u00edgado de bacalao tambi\u00e9n contiene vitaminas A y D, y el aceite de algas es una fuente vegana de DHA (por tanto apto para dietas veganas).<\/p>\n<p>Pero entonces\u2026 \u00bfcu\u00e1l debo comprar? <strong>Lo verdaderamente importante es considerar varios par\u00e1metros de calidad que aseguren su eficacia y seguridad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><ol><li><strong>Sellos de calidad y certificaciones<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><\/h3>\n<p>Aseg\u00farate de elegir un suplemento que cuente con certificaciones de calidad. El <strong>sello IFOS<\/strong> (<em>International Fish Oil Standards<\/em>) es uno de los m\u00e1s reconocidos e importantes a nivel internacional, garantizando la <strong>ausencia de contaminantes<\/strong> (metales pesados, dioxinas, PCB y otras sustancias t\u00f3xicas), <strong>su frescura y pureza<\/strong>, as\u00ed como que <strong>presenta los niveles \u00f3ptimos de omega-3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Pero adem\u00e1s de este, existen otros sellos de calidad como el <strong>sello FOS<\/strong> (<em>Friend Of the Sea<\/em>), que <strong>certifica pr\u00e1cticas de pesca y acuicultura sostenibles<\/strong>, y los sellos <strong>GMP<\/strong> (<em>Good Manufacturing Practices<\/em>) y el <strong>sello IFS<\/strong> (<em>International Featured Standards<\/em>), que indican que el <strong>producto ha sido fabricado en instalaciones que cumplen con altos est\u00e1ndares de calidad y seguridad<\/strong>, entre otros.<\/p>\n<h3><ol start=\"2\"><li><strong>Concentraci\u00f3n de EPA y DHA<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><\/h3>\n<p>Es importante que el suplemento contenga una <strong>cantidad adecuada de los \u00e1cidos grasos EPA y DHA<\/strong>, ya que estos son los m\u00e1s efectivos para la salud cardiovascular y cerebral. Para ello hay que tener en cuenta que la <strong>cantidad m\u00ednima que se recomienda de EPA y DHA combinados en adultos es de 250 mg\/d\u00eda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Conclusi\u00f3n<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Por tanto, hemos visto la importancia que tienen los \u00e1cidos grasos omega-3 en el organismo, y que estos necesitan ser incorporados a trav\u00e9s de la dieta o la suplementaci\u00f3n. <strong>Siempre se debe priorizar la incorporaci\u00f3n de los nutrientes a trav\u00e9s de los alimentos<\/strong> antes que optar directamente por la suplementaci\u00f3n, siendo en este caso <strong>importante el consumo de pescados grasos y marisco, ciertos aceites vegetales, as\u00ed como semillas y frutos secos como las nueces<\/strong>. No obstante, en personas que presenten ciertas patolog\u00edas como <strong>cardiopat\u00edas, trastornos inflamatorios (como la artritis reumatoide), as\u00ed como trastornos mentales o neurodegenerativos s\u00ed que se recomienda valorar el uso de suplementaci\u00f3n de omega-3<\/strong>.
